"LOCAL"
group exhibition at Samvirke Gallery, Veiholmen, Møre og
Romsdal, Norway
In the summer of 2014, I had a residency at the Samvirke Guest
studio. The artist Hanne Ekkeren and I cooperated on a seaweed
project that produced the exhibition "Local".
We
wanted to explore the material of seaweed and what techniques
might be usable to create shapes such as dishes that would signal
generosity.
Some
works turned out sculptural, while others became utensils that
Zoe Christensen (Future Food) used in her popup kitchen (created
by contemporary artist Hilde Rognskog) where she served dishes
based on seaweed.
Artists
from Halsa, Oslo, and Berlin came to work at the location for
14 days to create the exhibition LOCAL at the Samvirke gallery.
In accordance with the theme Local, we used raw materials and
resources local to the site.
The
Berlin artists Katja van Ravenstein and Volker Seifried from Berlin
created sculpture from old driftwood. Ingwill Gjelsvik and Hanne
Ekkeren created sculptural dishes and explored seaweed as a material.
The
exhibition also showed objects by Leif Inge, drawings by Ingwill
Gjelsvik, and graphic works by Arild Yttri.
The
Italian chef Vittorio Serritelli brought two students from Italy
to hold courses in the use of local raw materials in new ways.
The
Samvirke artists' studio and gallery were formed in July 2013
by contemporary artists Heidi Rognskog Mella and Mona Eckhoff
Sørmo at the fishing village Veiholmen in the Møre
og Romsdal region.
The
guest studio and gallery are open for professional artists who
wish to work and exhibit for periods up to three months. More
